We Will Never Have a Beginning or an End

Yeah, I'm here, I'm alive. A lot of time passed since the last entry, and, what happened? Well... Nothing. Just that.

It's a hard job, It's hard to be part of this world, and all it's so overwhelming in the 3D world. but I think that is harder seeing that you have the experience and requisites and you passed all your past hearing NO from all kinds of companies, and when you have the luck to hear YES from somewhere you feel like you will not hear that much NOes from that spot.

Well, the thing is that is not that easy. There are a lot of people doing the same work you do, there are better people than you, and of course, worst people than you. And they are working.
Happens the same when you are searching for job, you are not alone, there are people better than you searching for the same job and worse people than you.
Unfortunately companies not only judges you for your job and qualities, I know this because I've seen it and I'm living it from the other side now, the point is, you need to know people and you need to know how to sell your stuff.

That's my problem, I'm not a seller and I'm not Facebook. It's like being inside and out of this.

I always loved my job and I always did all my things the better I can in the time that I had. All my workmates knows it  and all the companies where I worked knew it, and most of them where really happy with me and the things that I achieved with all the pros/cons.
Something invisible for other companies... like the recommendation letters.

2018, my less productive year, my worst year of this lasts years, feels like a wasted one.
Of course, this year had such good things, but like I was saying before, Invisible things. And well this Entry is just to release that small amount of pain and to show the things that I did in 2018.

Let's see friends.

The most remarkable thing was the release of the game OVAL, OVAL is my first game published on Steam, I worked a lot on things that are inside Oval, all the team worked and reworked a lot on this game. All this work was thanks to my friend Néstor Viña, The game was like the fourth or something like that on the most bought on the VR lists and the first on Reddit the firsts weeks of the game.



Well, lot's of companies asks you for released games, this one had a nice success, and the graphics were and are really great, lets take a look to some things that I did.

VR requires low detail, but we achieved a nice level of quality with the materials and the textures, and we achieved lots of stuff, for example, we had one official tournament in one of the most important fairs of Spain, the "Madrid Games Week", companies like HTC Vive, Nvidia and the most important blog of VR of Spain trusted in our game, Why isn't all of this enough?

I had really bad experiences with job searching all this year, I did 3 job tests and was one of the worst things that I accepted to do. But I always try to learn about my errors, and this will never happen again, I'm completely sure.

In one of the tests for a "Mid-Senior Modeler" position I needed to model a computer piece with a limit of polygons, up to here all correct, I studied the object and did a sketch about how was the process going to be.

 One of the funniest parts of the process.


And I did all the basic things, centered pivots, element groups, renames, real dimensions, lots of unspecified things that I think that are very important.


This was my first result, the model has some fails, but SURPRISE, the position is for modeling, but not the test, I only had 3 days to MODEL, CREATE AN UNITY SCENE, ANIMATE PARTS OF THE MODEL, CREATE ANIMATED SHADER, ILUMINATE SCENE, and other stupid details, and all of this for FREE (My first big mistake)

Well, in case of emergency I have a pseudo-correct model that at first sight is nice. that was finished in half of a day. The next days I studied how to create animated shaders, animate in unity, and lots of stuff that a Modeler shoudn't do on his position. But well, I have the knowledge to do that, but the important thing is:
  1.  I'm not a professional Unity Animator.
  2.  I'm not a professional Shader artist.
  3.  I'm not a professional Light artist.
  4.  I'm not a professional Unity developer.
  5.  I'm not a professional Interiorist.

So, Can I do the job of this kind of professionals? YES, but not as good as a person that really knows his work. In my mails, and in the interviews I always say the same: I'm an Inorganic Modeler, specialized on Environments, props and Textures. I do all the processes from start to end. I know more stuff and I can help in situational things but I'm not a professional person of that kind of jobs.

More funny stuff, I wasted 2 days trying to be Unity animator, shader artist, light artist, interiorist and unity developer. And when I finished I didn't had the time to fix my model (Mistake two), I neglected my real work (modeler) to get ahead the others. And since I'm not from any of the previous trades, I couldn't stand out in anything. Result:

Why they were saying "severe issues", well, as I said my model was not at all correct, but he had another problem here, he tried to import my model that was inside of Unity into 3DS Max as a result of it he lost ALL THE SMOOTHING GROUPS, and it wasn't the only incorrect thing, then he TRIED TO EXPORT IT AGAIN AND DRAG IT ON UNITY, well... I sent an Unity scene, if you rip something from there to import it on 3DS, you will have this:

One of the rules was: You can add whatever thing you want to the scene, but will not be judged. FOOL OF ME, to make the lights more real I added lamps from the internet, because of time, well (Third big mistake) the models weren't prepared for Unity so when I did the lights, the bake created shadows over the topology, but I didn't cared because were not going to be judged; just look at this:

They were judging the in theory "non-judged stuff". Because of confidentiality things I can't say the name of the company, but who cares. 

In conclusion: 

Yeah, that's what you take when you are not searching for the CORRECT PERSONS, and I said PERSONS, not person.

In other one they told me to go like 207Km approximately from my house to do the test;
-Position: "INORGANIC MODELER FOR AMUSEMENT PARKS"
-Test: Model a Cartoon Fish Character in highpoly on 3DS MAX in only 1 hour. (The concept... I needed like 20 minutes to set up the pictures and to fix the 3DS MAX version of the office, and I'm not going to talk about their hardware, for example the mouse...) All a complete disaster, waste of money, waste of time...
They told me that they were searching other kind of professionals because they had like 10 persons doing ZBrush stuff, and I said that I was not an sculpture artist on the mails, but they wanted to do this joke anyways.

Well, I'm not going to talk about more of this things, because are mistakes, are things to learn, but keeps me asking on my mind, What do companies want from me? This is not what I learnt or what I worked before.

I'm just trying to find a place to work, I'm just trying to find a place to do what I love, to do my job. I don't need tests, you can see my works on my portfolio that is the most important thing about me, not stupid quests for superhumans. You must value that, not if I look like something; and if you need to know what are the things that other companies have seen on me, ASK, don't pass or waste my time, because the hardest part of it is that I don't live with air, and I can't work in 3D all the time and do SUPER-PROJECTS alone, because I had to search for another kind of work and when I arrive at home I'm tired and I don't have the same time as when I was a teenager.

So, this 2018 was a complete disaster, that's why I think that 2019 can't be worse in this aspect, that's why I think that 2019 will be a better and happier year, and I hope the same to everyone.
